If you open a QuickBooks file in multi-user mode you get QuickBooks Error H202 with the following message:
You are trying to work with a company file that is located on another computer, and this copy of QuickBooks cannot reach the server on that computer. (H202);
Or
You are trying to work with a company file that is located on another computer, and that computer needs additional installation and setup. (H101, H303, and H505)
CAUSES OF QUICKBOOKS ERROR H202
- Hosting configuration settings are wrong.
- A firewall is blocking communication in or out.
- Damaged or wrong ND file.
- QuickBooks cannot get the IP address of the company file host system.

Solution 1: Verify the Hosting Process
1. Open QuickBooks by double-clicking its icon and navigate to File >> Utilities.
2. You should be able to see the Host Multi-User Access option on the list which appears which means that this computer is not hosting the company file and it’s safe to move on to the next computer. Make sure you don’t change anything if you see this option.
3. If you click on File >> Utilities and you see the Stop Hosting Multi-User Access click on this option which will prevent this computer from being the host, leaving only the host computer.
4. Repeat this process for all computers except for the real host.
Solution 2: Open network ports QuickBooks to communicate Configure the Firewall
- Make connection Windows Firewall Settings
- On the left, right-click on Outbound Rules, and select New Rule
- Select Ports and click Next.
- Choose TCP and in the specific local ports box.
- Click Next and select Allow the Connection.
- Click Next to enter a name in the name field (for example, “QuickBooks ports”) and click Finish.
- Repeat the above steps for the Inbound Rules.
- Open QuickBooks in multi-user mode.
Solution 3: Create a new folder for your company file
1. On the hosting computer, create a new folder, share it and Set up a folder and Windows access permissions to share company files.

2. Copy the .qbw file to the new folder.
3. Open your company files in multi-user mode again.
Solution 4: Recreate the.ND file:
1. Click the Windows Start button.
2. Select All Programs, select QuickBooks > QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
3. Click the Scan Folder tab.
4. Click the Add Folder button, browse to the company file folder.
5. Select the company file, click the OK button.
6. The path to the company file is in the Folders with QuickBooks company files field.
7. Click Scan to start the scanning process.
8. After the scan is complete, click Close.
